This year is the 4th Fishing Trip, yet for many of us it still doesn’t seem real. We’ve learned (with much work) to live with the pain of missing Billy’s physical presence everyday, and somehow our brains have adjusted to a new way of seeing life. So many of those who are deeply affected by Billy’s passing have gone down paths of helping others, living a non-judgmental life, appreciating the beautify of life and understanding that it’s not having the “most” in life that brings happiness, it’s “needing” the least….that love is truly unconditional and longtime friends and those put in our path while on this journey “are” our family of brothers and sisters. We have learned that we truly are guided by a greater force if we let down our guards and “let it go, and let it flow.” That faith in whatever empowers you can help you achieve things we never thought possible. I will always question “why Billy?” at those moments when I feel the weakest, and then I look around and see so much good that he has accomplished (like the grain of wheat that only multiplies once it has fallen), and I take that deep breath that I have learned fills me with hope. On the back of the t-shirts this year there is an Eagle carrying the Eternity Anchor. Billy and I often spoke in metaphors about life…..finding success and flying high like an Eagle, “Fly like an Eagle (Seal) on his 16th Birthday Montage. Billy gave me a beautiful framed Bible Verse “Isaiah 40:31…..they will soar on wings like eagles.” The week after Billy passed we were all in the kitchen and Larry said “Deb, look out the window….on the tree!” ….there was the biggest Hawk? Eagle?, whatever it was looking right at me ♥ I became filled with an emotion I have come to learn is “hope.” Free Bird is a song that I have found on many of Billy’s play lists, and I truly believe that I was guided to British Airways (Toni was the conduit, Billy was the reason), to take these trips of wonder and awe that have been a great source of strength, life learning and well being for us. The Eagle’s Historical and Traditional meaning, of course, is the reigning symbol of the US representing freedom. The Native American Interpretation of the Eagle is Great Spirit. The Eagle power animal takes you on a journey of flight which opens you to new vistas of perception and new dimensions of awareness, this is an invitation “to look at things with new eyes.”

Journey within Gratitude ♥ We came together to share a beautiful night of Yoga and Meditation…an event in Billy’s honor, Joan, Lisa “Lotus Blossom Journeys” ran the workshop and donated a portion to Shatterproof Jaqui “Om Tara Yoga” matched the donation to Shatterproof in Billy’s name^675 was raised for this wonderful cause.

Billy’s 24th Birthday♥ Billy turning 24 on the 24th….very powerful day. Our hearts remain broken, but the broken part is starting to fill with gratitude. Being grateful on this day 24 years ago when he was given to us, our family became complete, our hearts smiled with a love beyond measure and the laughter rose to new levels. The honor and pride of having a son that filled our lives with experiences and emotions that we never imagined has been the source of our strength. Our great love keeps us connected in a bond that has the power to withstand the finality of what was to be.
Today we celebrate your life and all the special memories of so many wonderful times. From the time that you took your first steps you hit the ground running and never stopped! Enjoying every day and every experience, making everlasting memories with friends and family who love you wholeheartedly. It’s been said “It’s not the years in your life that count, but the life in your years”- Abe Lincoln – and while we struggle to accept this rationale, we know of its truth. We give honor to your courage fighting a disease that has become an epidemic yet still remains grossly misunderstood. We are forever grateful for having you in our lives. The 2nd Annual Fishing Trip in Billy’s Honor ♥ The back of the shirts read “Keep Calm and Chive On” Although this is now a huge social movement on social media, (can be strange at times – although lots of it is about paying it forward), back in the day before anyone knew about this, Billy called his first car – Nice looking Chrysler 300, “The Chive.” Not surprising at all as Billy would give names to everything and everyone, including himself! Recently a few of the girls relayed stories of seeing these Bumper Stickers at times when they had experienced a feeling of Billy’s presence and it had me thinking……Chive On has come to mean all that Billy was. Being a loving son and brother, a good friend to his buddies, sharing all that he had with those he was closest to – including his love of the water, boating, jet skiing, fishing, etc… giving ALL of us experiences we never dreamed we would have (like Larry and I on the top of double diamond mountains skiing, watching him play football, playing drums in the school band, etc….) always, greeting each day with excitement – what to do next, reaching and trying new things and succeeding (like becoming an EMT on his way to Medical School, while suffering with a disease we knew little about) loving all of his girlfriends and above all being a friend to them, giving all of himself to a very special one And now, even after his passing he continues to give us experiences….Rappelling off buildings to raise awareness of Addiction Disease, running a GRASP monthly support group at St. Rose, having this wonderful Annual Fishing Trip (which was actually his friends idea) that will hopefully keep this wonderful group always connected through him, We are also creating an Athletic Scholarship in Billy’s name at the Massapequa High School. So although we walk a fine line each day between our grief and life…our love for Billy will help us to “Keep Calm and Chive On.

I have been blessed with three exceptional children, and though our lives have been far from ordinary I have come to understand the reason why Happy Mothers Day to all who have the honor of being called “Mom.”

Chrissy and I have the “cry smile faces”

On January 18th my beautiful great niece Jaymes was Bat Mitzvah’d. Going to “any” family event is difficult without Billy’s physical presence, but this one was extra tough. A memorable night with all of our loved ones, black tie and all. I pictured how Billy would look – so handsome, of course, and I kept that image in my head as I got dressed with my final accessory; an Anchor Locket that Larry gave me for Christmas. The night was magical as Steve and Eliza outdid themselves with a celebration that will be talked about for many years to come. Larry was honored to participate in the service, and I just kept breathing it all in. Right before our eyes Jaymes, no longer a little girl, now a young lady! Stepping into the reception, we were completely surrounded by the most elegant decorations, flowers, living statues (yes living),photo booths, dancers, I could go on. When the time came for Jaymes to light her 13 candles I (and 300 others) watched and listened to her every word. When I heard her say our families’ names and included “Billy in heaven” ♥ it was all I could do to walk up, but at the same time I felt like the tallest person in the room. They played “Sunshine of your Love” with Eric Clapton at the vocals (I’ll save that for another story). A “defining” moment in our family for sure – Billy will ALWAYS be with us at every family event ♥ ALWAYS Debbie

This Christmas we spent the “Eve” at Ron and Janine’s – they did such a beautiful job hosting. All of our family was present (so it was the immediate 35+!) I made a toast to thank them and to Billy and all of our loved ones who have crossed over….that they continue to guide us and teach us that LOVE is really all that matters in this lifetime ♥ All the families received Hugz from heaven pillows and sachets – Billy was all around us ♥♥♥

Sometimes i bring myself way too down not understanding why things are the way they are.. but then i think back and literally laugh out loud at some of the best memories I am lucky to have. growing up with a sister I always wanted to have and we would tell lil cuz Harlie Rae Battey scary stories and huddle in my room during thunder storms, car jams and crazy adventures with Billy Garceau and the girls, walking home from elementary school with the quealys causing chaos..4 pairs of crazy twins in a religion (ya that DID NOT last) .. ryan always had that big smile when we would reunite and have the biggest hugs! these memories…. forever and ever will be with me send them on their way… RIP kaitlyn, billy, ryan

Memorial Mass in Billy’s Honor 11/9/13

A special gathering and Mass was held today in Billy’s honor. Stephanie and Anthony sang from their hearts, songs that were specially chosen for this day, including: Casting Crowns “Who am I” – Laura Story “Blessings” and Sean McDonald “I will Rise” Fr. Ken’s words of comfort…telling of how a single grain of wheat can grow and remain unchanged, but when the wheat falls it multiplies over and over. In so many ways, this has become true of Billy’s passing. A year ago today, I lost not only a great friend, but an important piece of my childhood and who I am today. Luckily, I was able to get closer than I ever was with him the summer before he passed as we were both back in the place we grew up. I recommend you make an attempt to remain close with those few friends that you have had since you were little, because you may not realize it, but they helped patch together who you are. My grandmother use to work there and there use to be a camp there for the employees children/grandchildren. Jimmy and the crew came up with this wonderful way to come together in Billy’s name ♥ Jimmy took the helm – had the t-shirts designed and made his popular (one of Billy’s favorites)”Buffalo Chicken Dip!” I’ve always told my kids that to have good friends you first had to be a good friend…..I’m so glad that Billy was that friend for everyone. My first Mothers Day without Billy’s physical presence, I struggle with my emotions of wanting so much to be wrapped in one of his “bear hugs” and receiving one of his cards with his classic “happy face w/ the dracula teeth”… and the reality of knowing he was suffering with a brain disease that was quietly, slithering its way to debilitating the very essence of his beautiful, loving inner-self. My deep love for Billy takes me to a place where I am able to surrender “my” needs and feel his love surround me like a warm blanket. I continue to pray that he remains close by my side during this difficult journey. Billy gave me this plaque a few years back and it’s the first sentence that speaks the loudest to me ♥

This isn’t easy for me and as sad as I am about the reason why we are all here today, I can’t not think about Billy without a big smile on my face. I grew up in Massapequa with all of our friends that are here today and I feel so blessed to have had such a great childhood with the greatest people. One of my favorite memories of Billy was long before designated drivers was a thought in our heads. Billy was my designated “Pegger.” We rode around on our bikes everywhere and I always rode on back of Billy’s green bike. He would sweat like no other dragging me around but that was just a testament to what a good friend he was. I remember spending many days in Billy’s backyard jumping on the trampoline. The boys would launch us 25 feet in the air and it was a miracle we never broke any bones. He was famous for his chest knockers. I’m sure my friends in the room can remember those. I can’t even describe it, they were torture but we couldn’t help but laugh. It’s been bittersweet looking at all of the pictures in the room. But there is one missing that a certain friend wouldn’t let us put up. Back in the day me and the girls spent an afternoon putting makeup on Billy and Jimmy. They were two of the prettiest boys I’ve ever seen! A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to spend some time with Billy, going out with everyone again. And now I’m really happy I did. Billy I’m really going to miss you. Billy was a great guy. Ill never forget the summer we graduated. he would pick me up every morning and we would wait for the rest of the girls to wake up and then we would decide what adventure we would go on for that day. he would drive us an hour away to just find the most beautiful scenic area to hang out at. Billy loved hanging out with just the girls! i must say, the guys got jealous that summer because we stole him from them. and im happy we did, because we now have all these great memories. I remember so many wonderful memories that make me smile, Who could forget our trip to Canandaigua, Niagara falls and Howe caverns, Key West and the plane ride to get there, the plane was so small!! We all were so happy and excited, oh and Disney was so fun even though we were “stranded” due to a snow storm in NY. We had a lot of chicken wings and pizza that week. Hershey Park the kids had so much fun, Billy loved the butterfly exhibit a lot!

Even though Billy was a stocky, handsome, 22 year old when he passed, I will always see him as the 2 year old rambunctious, happy little boy playing on his bedroom floor when I met him for the first time. I remember thinking, he is soooo cute. I bent down and said, “Hiiiii Billy”. He looked up, smiled that famous smile, and bopped me right in the nose. I was one week post nose job, so I remember it well.
And although I saw him grow up over the next 20 years, I never knew him better than I do today after having had the opportunity to meet his friends and hear the great stories of the Billy they knew. I feel like now I really know Billy, for his complete self – his struggles and strengths, sorrows and pride, and most importantly, the affects he had on everyone is his life. I am comforted and grateful for the opportunity to truly know him.
I hope you all continue your relationship with Billy – talk to him, think of him, tell him a joke out loud, because he is with us and he does hear you. Yesterday, my son, Chase, said that he asked Billy to help him get the high score on his video game “and he did.” So please remember that Billy is very much around. Seeing the little children in church and your beautiful second cousins today reminded me of the years that Dad would try to explain to me that it “wasn’t Christmas” as I filled the Easter baskets to the top! We would attend the Easter Vigil because you thought it was cool that part of the Mass was held in candlelight…You were the force today that brought our whole family together for Mass and brunch.
